| Re: Meaning of life Quote:
Knowledge is a stepping stone. You stand on one to reach another. As such, no bit of knowledge can be considered as a goal, but the goal is life, and for life, no knowledge will ever be sufficient as no one can know all or even enough to preserve life forever. What we cannot do for the individual we cannot do for all of humanity; so again, knowledge is not the goal, but the means to a long life, a good life, and a rational life for all of humanity for all the time we have. That person who tries to make a personal gain from knowedge is poisoning life, his life, and all. If knowledge is good, then it is good for all, and good because it is good for all. Can you make your self a god, or a king, or a thief with what you know? Such knowledge proves ignorance. Good must come of good. If you make yourself a master you make all others slaves. Since a master is more a slave than a slave, because he chooses his state out of ignorance and not out of duress, in what sense is he improved? To lower the state of any human being lowers the condition of all. We are one, and the limits we set upon each other, and the impediments we put in the common path are like a string on a balloon keeping humanity from free flight. We cannot reach our natural limits standing on the heart of mankind. We limit ourselves with our limits. If this is true why should any people and all people limit themselves to the most primitive of relationship which is between mankind and their parasites... |

| Re: Meaning of life
"What's the meaning of life?" An easy thing to ask yet hard to answer, life could mean being here, feeling, having influence on your environment and so on. I do not believe nor have I found any evidence that I'm here for some special reason, the same goes for the afterlife, so rationally thinking this would lead to the conclusion that life has no meaning. "What meaning has life to me?" This question is different though and therefor has a different answer. Life has many meanings to me from big to small things. To me living means effecting and changing things around me. It means learning, it means feeling pain and joy, it means making mistakes, it means helping people around me getting along with their life among other things. I do not know if you could consider this a meaning but it quite certainly defines life for me. |

If there was a meaning of life, would we follow that meaning. In my opinion the meaning of life is to exist. If we don't exist then we have no need to live. Therefore there would be no such thing as the meaning of life.

Hi all, ![]() The purpose or meaning to life might be in rationally understanding that, the quality of your life depends upon you giving value to things in this life. These things which you have given value to, will substain you throughout your life, and in giving meaning to certain relationships you give something of yourself to the other, which hopefully will substain them. Nothing in and of itself has value, value/meaning is something only a conscious subject can bestow upon the world of objects. |

| Re: Meaning of life
As much as it annooys me, I have to agree with Fido. The meaning of life is inseperable from life; life has no meaning outside of itself, no external justification. Therefore, any generalization is impossible, as all lives are different; the meaning of my life at this moment is typing a response in this forum; hopefully someone out there is doing something better. THe value of living is in living per se; the value of any action is in that action per se. That is why my justification for life, the only one that has survived my merciless criticism, is aesthetic. Life is a peice of high drama, or comedy. Sorry to bring up a old chestnut of mine, but this relates very much to the division between subject and object; an event cannot be allowed to stand on its own; there must be a division between that which acts and that which is acted upon, cause and effect. In the same way, it is demanded that there be division between the thing and its meaning. In both cases, the division is false.

Is the meaning of life not to experience? It seems to be so. Every tool given to living things is directly used to experience and reason. Every aspect of our life is based around one experience or another. It should seem to me then that life's purpose is to live. |
