Re: PhilosophyForum.com Rules

Nationalcosmopolitan, are you wondering why you cannot start a new thread with this topic? Or did you post it, and it got deleted?
New members are prevented from posting new topics until they have become full members by posting in other threads first. If you wish to start a topic of your own, then you must simply post in other topics until your membership status changes.
Interesting topic of discussion, by the way. I like it.

Re: PhilosophyForum.com Rules

Dear Justin,

You recently closed a thread of mine, which had no future anyhow. You said:

"This thread has been closed. This forum nor the Philosophy of Science area is for the discussion of other members. If any of you have a problem with a member on this forum you should report the post that is the issue. Discussion of other members in the public forums in prohibited. To start a thread in a forum that has nothing to do with the forum topic, Philosophy of Science - is also prohibited."

I say, grow a sense of humour. No one, including Bacardi, object of the joke, was offended. Smiley emoticons abounded...that's all.

Yes. I understand why the rules are like they are, but considering the attitude within that thread, perhaps merely a move would have sufficed?

Re: PhilosophyForum.com Rules

Wise men choose their battles carefully. The rules state that the thread did not belong there. The rules also state that this is not the sort of forum for threads of that manner. Perhaps general discussion could have been appropriate but an argument will accomplish nothing.

Frankly, I think he had ever right to close the thread. The rules are fairly clear on this matter.

That's fine, I understand it was a joke and nobody was really taking it seriously but it was a thread started in the Philosophy of Science section. First of all, it does not belong there. Secondly, if it's a joke that the moderators here have to open a thread to discuss this and perform a number of tasks to keep this forum clean and on topic, maybe we don't see it as a joke at all.

It takes time and effort to maintain this forum and to me, there's nothing funny about that. Pruning threads, moving posts, fixing quotes and trying to maintain a level of organization is not a joking matter.

I have a sense of humor and don't mind a good joke... However, there's a time and place for everything and that wasn't the place for it. I also understand it wasn't meant maliciously so that's not the issue. The issue is that it's caused additional workload for those of us that do our best to take care of the forum on the side that many of you all don't see. We've spent the last half hour going through post history to find out why this was brought up and if there isn't something that should be addressed. That is not a joke.

This is also not the place to discuss this type of stuff either, which will also be moved.

Peace to all and no harm done. No infractions were issued and we've all learned something.

Re: PhilosophyForum.com Rules

Well, although I got a severe kick of laughter out of the posts mentioned here, I think it is right and good that we keep the discussions off individuals themselves. There's a real potential for pack mentality and shark-circling to happen that just destroys any good discourse.

That being said, I do like it when we *can* interject some humor and playful poking; it helps keep things light. But that's a fine line, and I'm glad there's someone watching all us kids in the sand box cuz I hate it when someone boffs me with a ball of mud while I'm trying to build MY castle.

Thanks

Re: PhilosophyForum.com Rules

What is the policy concerning the use of profanity?

I have noticed that those who use profanity have their words "******" 'ed out.

I am curious as to the rationale for this.

Thank you for your time.

Re: PhilosophyForum.com Rules

We discourage use of profanity. It is a part of the general scope of this forum and it's not needed. There are a lot of places where you can find profanity and spam and this simply isn't going to be one them. - Hope that answered your question.
