If there is to be free will, it can only come about through self-awareness. Only by knowing what we are can we make the decisions that cause us to be who we want to be. This causa sui, self-creation, behaving as the person one wants to be as opposed to the person nature has created, is the whole of free will.
Now this doesn't answer the ultimate question of free will. It does not address determinism. It may be entirely possible for us to know who we are but still never break free from nature's causal chain.
However, acceptance of determinism is simply not possible....
