Definitions of "Sustain"

Thank you for your interest.

A funny thing happened to me on the way to finding definitions for "sustain". I noticed that all the definitions consisted of verbs or what I later learned are called "verb phrases" (i.e, "be supportive of," "hold up," "manage to withstand something and continue in spite of it"). Below is an alphabetical list of the various definitions for "sustain" that I was able to obtain by examining several online dictionaries (I hope you like long lists):

Sustainability: How to Keep It Up While Going Down

I am starting this blog to focus on the concept of "sustainability", which I feel has not been adequately examined from a philosophical point of view. As an environmentalist, I have been concerned about sustainability since the term was first gained prominence in the 1990s. But as an amateur philosopher, I have only recently seen its possible wider significance in the light of the use of the concept, if not the word, by the Spanish philosopher José Ortega y Gasset (1883-1955), whom I've been studying for over 50 years.

First let's look at some dictionary definitions to see...
